Mon 7 September 2026

The first Monday in September 2026 – it’s set to be properly warm and summery again today. What is happening in Germany now, following yesterday’s election in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD – a party widely regarded in some quarters as firmly far-right – managed to secure the most votes?.

It’s baffling, and one can only ask: haven’t any of you actually read the AfD’s election manifesto? Weren’t you the ones in the East who wanted to get out of the GDR? You took to the streets because you wanted democracy and no longer wanted to be a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Have you already forgotten the Stasi, with its spying and harassment of the population and those with differing views? What about those who died at the Wall? Didn’t your parents or grandparents explain to you what it was like to stand in front of a wall but not be allowed to get out? And then there’s also our right-wing past, which was brought to an end by the Allies in 1945. Not only were neighbouring countries attacked, occupied and oppressed on flimsy pretexts, but millions of people – men, women and children – were murdered simply because they held the ‘wrong’ beliefs or were opposed to the dictator Hitler.

And what about the urgently needed skilled workers? Does any AfD voter really believe that doctors, nurses or carers from abroad would voluntarily come to a country where they are not really welcome? It will be interesting to see just how far federal politics drifts to the right, or whether it manages to find urgent solutions to our country’s problems and explain them credibly to the public.

We hope you have a pleasant working week and continue to believe in the good in people.
