It’s Friday and the weekend is just round the corner – a weekend when, for the first time since the end of the Second World War, a Nazi party – the AfD – could once again win an election in a federal state. At the very least, the election forecasts paint a grim picture for the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

News from the US tells us that Donald Trump is claiming that the Europeans still owe the US billions for weapons supplied to Ukraine. He is fighting to hold on to power by any means necessary ahead of the mid-term elections in the US, and, of course, it is always someone else’s fault.

The German motoring giant Volkswagen is fighting for its economic survival. A rigorous cost-cutting programme is to be implemented. Investment is to be slashed and the model range is to be scaled back to the most popular models; tens of thousands of jobs are also set to be lost.

If the people of Saxony-Anhalt do indeed help the far-right AfD party secure an absolute majority this weekend, the redundant Volkswagen workers could retrain and replace staff from ethnic minority backgrounds in care homes, hospitals and other sectors across Saxony-Anhalt. We are curious to see who will then still be able to help the people there who need assistance.

We hope, for the sake of the people of Saxony-Anhalt, that even after the weekend they will still have an elected democratic party in the state government that stands up for local people and is not part of a fan club for autocrats such as Putin or Trump.
